Natural Methods of Whitening Teeth

Baking soda is tried and tested natural teeth whitening remedy and can reduce any acids that may harm tooth enamel. Not only does it remove stains, but it also has anti-bacterial properties and fights plaque. Baking soda can be mixed with salt to scrub away stains from teeth. A popular home whitening treatment was suggested by New York dentist Adina Carrel, DMD using strawberries and baking soda. She finds that the combination is a fast and cheap way to cleanse stains on teeth. Though she points out: “Be careful not to use this too often, though, as the acid could damage the enamel on your teeth.”

Whiten Teeth Naturally by Stopping Habits that Stain Teeth

Some liquids leave stains on the surface of the teeth which will limit the effectiveness of natural teeth whiteners. Drinks such as coffee, tea, soda and red wine all leave stains on the teeth. In addition, nicotine from cigarettes is one of the biggest strainers of teeth. Stop smoking to prevent further buildup of stained teeth.

Using the above natural teeth whiteners, either individually or combined, will whiten teeth naturally. Results will be seen in as little as a week, although ongoing treatment is necessary for the most dramatic results.

Brush with Baking Soda to Whiten Teeth Naturally

For a natural teeth whitening option that can be used daily, start brushing with baking soda. Dampen a toothbrush in water and sprinkle baking soda onto the toothbrush. Brush teeth as normal to whiten teeth naturally. The added benefit of the mild abrasive action is that it prevents the buildup of new stains on the teeth. Rinse the mouth thoroughly after brushing. For those who don’t like the taste of baking soda, pour mouthwash onto the toothbrush instead of water to give the baking soda a minty taste.

Eat Strawberries to Whiten Teeth Naturally

Foods, such as strawberries, can also work as natural teeth whitening options. Strawberries contain a substance called muric acid which whitens teeth naturally by removing surface stains. Not only will eating strawberries whiten teeth, but a paste can be made out of the strawberries as well.

According to Health.com, strawberry paste can be made by crushing up a strawberry and combining it with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Spread the strawberry paste onto the teeth and allow it to sit for five minutes. Then work the paste into the teeth by brushing with a tooth brush and rinse the mouth well with water.

Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide to Whiten Teeth Naturally

Another natural teeth whitening option is hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can be used in place of mouthwash once or twice per day to whiten teeth. In addition, the peroxide has the added benefit of killing germs and bacteria that can cause gum disease and gingivitis. Although the hydrogen peroxide that you purchase at the store is not as strong as the levels found in commercial teeth whitening products, over time it will work just as well.

 

The babul twigs and banyan roots are used as disposable toothbrushes in India. It has been suggested that the tannins present in babul increase the whiteness of teeth. Licorice root is used in Africa in the same way- first chewing on the dry root and then brushing with the flayed bits.

Sage leaves can be used fresh or dried to whiten teeth by directly rubbing onto teeth. Tulsi (holy basil) is in India with similar results.
